Maruti targets to sell 50,000 units of A-Star nationally
KOCHI: Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd said on Friday that it was targetting sale of about 50,000 units of its laterst model- A-star in the domestic market.

The car would be manufactured in Manesar production facility where the capacity has been upgraded to manufacture three lakh cars a year.

Kerala is a very important and unique market for Maruti and accounts for 10 per cent of its all India sales, C V Raman, Chief General Manager-Engineering told reporters after the launch of the new car in the Kerala market.

The A star will be made in over 200 variants and exported to around 150 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, Asia, Australia and Africa, he said adding it would contribute half of Maruti Suzuki's overall export target of 200,000 units by 2010-11. The company plans to commence exports of A-star in early 2009 to Europe, he said.

On global meltdown, Raman said nobody is insulated. In the European market also there is a downturn in the 'B' and 'C' category. But Maruti hopes to do good sales in the 'A' segment, he said.

He said there were no plans to reduce price of Swift-- petrol and diesel which continues to be in great demand. The production of Swift Diesel has been doubled.
