GM India to roll out CNG and LPG vehicles
BANGALORE: With its focus on Research and Development (R&D), automobile giant General Motor India is looking at alternate fuels and is working o n CNG and LPG vehicles, a senior official said.

"We are looking at CNG and LPG vehicles for India and are closely working with our regional partners in Thailand (for CNG) and Korea (for LPG) in this connection," GM India, Director Vehicles Integration-India, Ravi Desai, told reporters here today.

The automaker is aggressively working on biodiesel programme and has sought 80 hectares of land in Gujarat to cultivate Jatropha, he said.

On GM Corporation's R&D investments before and after the global slowdown, Prakash who heads the India Science Lab (ISL), said the company "continues to invest $6-8 billion annually in advanced engineering," and added "innovation" is the top priority in GM.

"The ISL also works on "pre-competitive research" with other automakers like Ford, Nissan and Toyota and has a automotive consortium," he said, and added that a Collaborative Research Lab (CRL) had also been formalised with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur last year with an investment of Rs five crore.

GM Corp, which has a science lab in Israel, is planning to open one in China, he said.
