Aircraft technology in the automobile
Frankfurt/Hamburg, An organised exchange of experiences between the aviation and the automobile industries is meant to help solve the problems caused by electrical and electronic (E/E) systems. The international synergy forum "Aircraft meets Automotive: Systems Architectures" on 29 and 30 September in Hamburg provides a platform for both industries in order to exchange information about the development of system architectures. Practical experts from the aviation and the motor vehicle industry will present solutions which are interesting for the respective other industry. The event program can be called up in the internet at : www.aviation-conferences.com/architecture

Prof. Dr. Frank Thielecke from the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg and Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Manfred Broy from the Technical University in Munich will lead the symposium, which is organized by IIR Deutschland GmbH and the Car Training Institute. Henning Butz from Airbus will report on the challenges with the design of system architectures for airplanes. Frank Cornelius from Daimler and Matthias John from KTM will take on the aspects from the view of an automobile and a motorbike manufacturer. Dr. Mirko Jakovljevic from TTTech will show the possibilities of reusable platforms in the airplane and will explain the concept "more electrical aircraft". Joachim Bargmann from Airbus will explain how certification standards are implemented in order to secure the quality of airplane architectures.

Both in aviation as well as in the automobile industries, faults in the E/E systems have had serious consequences. Cabling problems are one of the causes for the delays in the delivery of the Airbus A380. (de.reuters.com, 13 May 2008) The most common breakdowns in cars according to the Dekra fault report 2008 are caused through errors in the electrical or electronic systems. (dekra.de, 8 Jan. 2008) Both industries are looking at the networking of hardware and software. This is made more difficult through the complexity of the overall system, the large number of interfaces and the use of differing communication protocols.
